The chronic rain and floods elsewhere in the country may have deterred some riders, but others chanced it to travel to Newmarket and were rewarded with a reasonable morning. The local rainfall ceased an hour before the start and the sun shone for most of the day. A rising southerly breeze assisted only a few returning riders to record improvements in their times.
